3.5 out of 5!
This book felt like a Nancy Meyers movie in the best way! Tom Lake is a lovely, feel-good book that (if you listen to the audiobook like I did) feels like your subtly cool, older female family member telling you a story. What Tom Lake maybe lacks in drama or excitement it makes up tenfold in beautiful, poignant writing, likable characters, a unique setting, and heartwarming themes/messages.

It was also refreshing to see a main character (Lara) so perfectly content and happy with her life ❤️ I found myself hoping to be that mature, content, and peaceful when I’m 57. Although, really, Lara shows us in her reminiscing that she’s always been pretty content. I really loved that quality in her.
One of my favorite quotes from the book is:
“It's not that I'm unaware of the suffering and soon-to-be suffering in the world, it's that I know the suffering exists beside wet grass and a bright blue sky recently scrubbed by rain. The beauty and the suffering are equally true.”
If you’re looking for a literary fiction book with excellent writing, a beautiful setting in a cherry orchard and Michigan summers on the lake, feel-good themes of family, love, and growing up, this is the book for you. Or, if you’ve always wished you could read a Nancy Meyers movie, Tom Lake is just the thing for you.
