4/5

This is my fifth Kate Morton book, and definitely one of my favorites! Homecoming felt more true to my two absolute favorite Morton books, The Secret Keeper and The Lake House. Homecoming has Morton's (of course) beautiful and strong writing style, but it also has so many elements I've come to love and expect from her books: complicated and dynamic relationships between the characters, mysteries with good twists, slightly unreliable narrators, and stories that are simultaneously heartbreaking and heartwarming.

The only reason this isn't a five-star read is that it's a very long book. The first 200 or so pages really should've been more like 50 pages. BUT, once I got past page 250 or so, it really picked up, and once I got around the 350-ish mark, I was fully enthralled.

I also like that this book left me questioning the motives and true character of one of the major characters. No spoilers, but let's just say there's a character you're made to believe is just THE BEST...but I'm not so convinced after reading the book 👀 And I think that's the point! I think like the characters in the book, their perceptions of each other vary quite a bit. Just like in real life, someone in my life who I consider one of my heroes could be the villain in someone else's life. Is one of us wrong, or are we both right in our opinions based on our experiences with that person? Questions like this are what I love most about Kate Morton's book; her best writing makes me think and question AND it's entertaining and moving. All of that and more is in Homecoming; you just have to get through the first 250 pages!
