Book Review: Daughter of the Sun: A Mothmar Novel by Amanda Auler

Updated: Nov 15, 2023

4.5/5

Excellent book! I highly recommend this if you’re looking for a totally unique fantasy book that will capture your full attention and never let go as you cheer for, groan at, hurt for, and yell at the complex, realistic characters. I would say the main themes are adventure, coming-of-age, self discovery, and family. I’d also rate it as a PG book, unless blood and violence bother you but even those elements of the book are pretty PG in my opinion. Full review below! ⬇️

WOW!!! Absolutely amazing story with a unique world and premise, complex characters with complex relationships, and an incredible twist that I did NOT see coming! I’ve given it 4.5 stars only because there were a handful of spelling and grammar mistakes, and there were some odd phrasings that sometimes took me out of the moment. Aside from that though, it is a gripping story that I couldn’t put down. This was the fastest I read a book all year (2022) and I absolutely can not wait for the second book!

I also want to point out that I haven’t read a fantasy book since high school and have avoided the genre as an adult because I assumed I wouldn’t like it, but when it comes to “Daughter Of The Sun”, I think it might be my favorite book of 2022 ! I applaud Amanda Auler for writing a fantasy book that’s not only a coming-of-age story (I love those) but that also focuses so much on family relationships. I don’t think family relationships are explored enough in books, so I love that Amanda did.

Besides the incredible world building, captivating plot, and complex characters, I also really enjoyed the fact that there is romance in the book but that it’s PG and more of a sub theme rather than a main theme. Part of why I’ve avoided fantasy books as an adult is because the most popular ones seem to have sooo much R-rated (sometimes X-rated) content. Kudos again to Amanda for breaking from the status quo.

I feel fully invested in the characters and their world, and I can’t wait to go on their adventures with them in book two!
