5/5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
TLDR: This was the PERFECT book for October, but of course, this can be read year-round. I loved the 80s gothic vibe, the characters, the twists and turns, the creepy setting, everything! I listened to the audiobook and really enjoyed it; huge kudos to both narrators.

Longer review:
The Only One Left hooked my attention immediately. Sager quickly establishes a unique setting that immerses you in the story, and gives a premise SO intriguing and a main character so imperfect that it's impossible not to read the first several chapters in one sitting.
I can't stress enough how much I love the gothic 80s vibe of the book. 1983, a dilapidating cliffside mansion in Maine, a caregiver with a sad and tragic life tasked with caring for an elderly woman accused (but never convicted) of murdering her entire family in 1929, the unsettling housekeeper, a missing former caregiver. It's all ✨chef's kiss✨
I'm normally good at guessing the twists/endings in a book, and although I did correctly guess some, the book consistently kept me guessing the entire book, even up until the very end!
On top of the book being very entertaining, the writing is also high quality. The pacing is perfect, the imagery, symbolism, and metaphors are well done, and the overall narrative is excellent.
I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in a murder mystery, especially if you enjoy a gothic 80s vibe.
