Book Review: The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid

Updated: May 30, 2023

5/5!

I LOVED this book!! I often compliment books on their realistic characters but this one takes the cake.

Evelyn Hugo particularly is such an interesting, complicated protagonist. She’s not all good, and she’s not all bad...because no one is. I was very impressed by how flawed and lovable all the characters were. Even the “villains” had redeeming qualities, and the protagonists we're meant to root for often made it hard to do so with their poor choices and character flaws. But I still loved and felt for each one in the end.

The plot is also very unique to me. I’ve never read a book that takes place during the Golden Age of Hollywood and follows the life of a star via an interview/her autobiography. Although it’s fiction, I know enough history to know that a lot of the “insider secrets” about old Hollywood aren’t made up. So the close up look we get of this fictional starlet’s life feels like it could’ve been the story of multiple famous women from that time period.

The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo had me hooked from page one and never let go. It’s entertaining, moving, keeps you guessing, and puts you on an emotional rollercoaster. The stand out star of this book is the masterfully created characters, but none shine as bright as the main character herself: Evelyn Hugo. She is a character that will stay with me forever.
