Book Review: Valentine by Elizabeth Wetmore

100/5 recommend!

This is one of my all-time favorite books. (Keep scrolling for the full review!)

Valentine is so different from anything I’ve ever read and I loved it. From page one I was hooked. By chapter three I was already crying because Elizabeth Wetmore so quickly and masterfully created characters and stories and experiences that feel scarily real. But I think that's because they are; many of the characters and stories in the book feel like people I know and experiences I’ve had or seen others have.

Valentine is an edge of your seat, heartbreaking, and yet spirit-lifting book about the resilience of women.

Below is a great plot summary of Valentine from GoodReads.

Warning: If you’re triggered by sexual assault and/or violence, I do caution you if you choose to read the book.

Valentine is a haunting exploration of the intersections of violence and race, class and region in a story that plumbs the depths of darkness and fear, yet offers a window into beauty and hope. Told through the alternating points of view of indelible characters who burrow deep in the reader’s heart, this fierce, unflinching, and surprisingly tender novel illuminates women’s strength and vulnerability, and reminds us that it is the stories we tell ourselves that keep us alive.
